Applaud your exciting Sales People

This is a copy of the the Sales Management Advice written by Mike Hutzel in 2019 – “A Supplement to The Alphabet Article Series – The ABCs of Solving Sales Problems – 3 T’s”

Renowned Mexican Poet Octavio Paz is quoted as saying, “I think we have our own personality, unique and distinctive, and at the same time, I think that our own unique and distinctive personality blends with the wind, with the footsteps in the street, with the noises around the corner, and with the silence of memory.” Given the importance of Tipping Points in this week’s article, I thought it relevant to be reminded of the personalities we all bring to our work.

Enter: Tinkerbell & Tasmanian Devil

I can hear you already – Alright, Mike, what the heck? You’ve really lost it this time…

Nope. You have both of these personalities and then some on your sales team. Here’s the kicker, if you think about Tink or Taz, both are loveable in their own regards. And from a distance, both have redeemable qualities. Here’s what’s even better, even though they both also have their own distinct styles, one a bit mischievous (Tink) and one a bit over the top (Taz), they both mean well.

Here’s what else you should applaud about people like this on your team, they are doers AND fixers. They have no sense of “proper” – after all, one uses fairy dust to get her way (a pleasing personality and a way with people) and the other just tears through the next obstacle (a fierce compassion to not take no for an answer). The reality is that both personality types have a real influence on your team, their tipping points, and often times, they have others in mind while filling their own agendas to accomplish their goals.

The methodology by which they help more subdued members of your team may need to be guided by you as their leader, without trying to corral either of them into some predetermined box. But they have passion and good intent and can fuel a team when it’s down. What’s more, these big personalities can inspire those around them. Because these people are selfless in their own ways, though their methods unorthodox, you can count on them in a pinch, especially when the chips are down. So can your team.
